First, we visited the Wounded Lion sculpture which commemorates the brave Swiss guards who died defending King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. When the rebels stormed the Tuileries Palace in France, they tried to bribe the Swiss guards to give up the Royal family for slaughter. The honor and principle of the Swiss guards eventually led to their deaths. The sad part was that the French royal family had escaped a while back, so the Swiss guards had been massacred for nothing.
We saw the different guilds like for pretzels, meat, fish and even for weights and measures along the promenade! We ended the walking tour in front of the Jesuit Church, right by the Chapel Bridge where the Sunday Market was.
Switzerland is known for making fine watches so now would be a good time to buy one! Casa Grande is the largest souvenir shop in Lucerne, and there’s a branch near the lake that has floors! They sell everything from chocolates to Swiss army knives and Swiss watches.
We drove from the town of Stans, embarking on a scenic journey by funicular railway to the cable car. We passed the rolling hills of Stans, complete with the quaint cottages and herd of cows in the foreground. It was peacful on the way up, and all I could hear was the soft clanging of the cowbells.
At the end of the funicular was the Stanserhorn CabriO, the world’s only open-top cable car. We took the cable car up the snowy mountain to reach the summit of the stunning Mt. Stanserhorn. The view up there was amazing!
Taking in the pristine mountain air on a clear day, we viewed Alsace and the Black Forest in the distance. I remember Alsace for Gewurztraminer because of my Sommelier Class. Stanserhorn Mountain was the perfect cap to the Glorious Switzerland Tour by Insight Vacations.
We spent about an hour going around the observation deck before heading back down to Stans to have had our celebratory dinner with the tour group at Hotel Winkelried Restaurant in Stansstad! It was a great trip where we met new friends and made new memories!
