Kandle Cafe is a green haven in the middle of Quezon City, offering fresh comfort food and quality coffee!
Kandle Cafe’s History
Born in April 2016, the name “Kandle” is spelled using the initials of the Ong-hay siblings: K. D. L. E.
The space used to be a “bodega” overrun by plants, which inspired the family to retain the original trees and the organic vibe of the place. Today, this spacious cafe is a warm, inviting space with lots of natural lighting, which is perfect for studying, working or dining with the family!
Both the indoor and outdoor seating can be rented for a consumable rate. There is also a sequestered room on the other side of the nursery for more private functions. (For inquiries, please contact the number at the bottom.)
Blue Butterfly Pea Flower Tea
We met Don Ong-hay and his dad during the Zomato Foodie Meet-up at Kandle Cafe. The dad is a passionate ambassador of the Blue Butterfly Pea Flower, which has so many health benefits: antioxidant, aphrodisiac, nootropic (cognitive and brain function), diuretic, and improve eyesight, hair growth, skin and sleep. In fact, he put up his own nursery outside where he grows and dries the petals of the blue pea flower.
Kandle Cafe serves the Blue Butterfly Pea Flower tea either hot or cold for PHP 60, but you can also buy the petals fresh for PHP 200 or dried for PHP 400. Add lime to make it purple!
Kandle Cafe Favorites
We all loved the bite-sized Paella Croquettes (PHP 290). The slightly spicy tomato salsa on the side complements the cheddar filling at the center.
The Black Calamares (PHP 390) in deep-fried squid ink batter is served with chili pepper mayo. I liked how it was made with giant squid–or squid that was bigger than usual–because I got to enjoy more of the tentacles!
Something that we couldn’t go without was the Cheezy QC Maki (PHP 295) sitting on a generous film of cheesy sauce and topped with bonito flakes. Filled with salmon and kani, each maki is burst of flavor.
Made with osterized shrimp heads, the rich Seafood Chowder (PHP 180) is a bowl of comfort in the ‘ber months.
I was craving for eggs, so I ordered the Cheesy Piggy (PHP 270), Kandle Cafe’s version of the Croque Madame with a German twist: ham, egg, jack cheese, cheddar and sauerkraut on grilled brioche bread.
Each strand of Palabok (PHP 440) has the rich seafood flavor from every element decorating the dish. Even the mussels, squid and the shrimp are filled with savor!
I kind of underestimated the Stuffed Chicken (PHP 360), not knowing it was stuffed. I thought it was regular grilled chicken breast served with hummus. Turns out, it was stuffed with herbed cream cheese, and the roti that came with it was slightly sweet! Perfect combo! I wish I had it while it was still warm!
The best part of the meal is when everyone’s had his/her fill and is just casually bonding over coffee and dessert. The Red Velvet Cheesecake had such a rich texture and a powerful, well-rounded flavor. The Flat White (PHP 145) went great with it! It’s a perfect ending to a perfect meal!
