What used to be a Japanese Latin Restaurant along Mother Ignacia is now Nanka Japanese Steakhouse, which specializes in perfectly prepared steak and seafood dishes accentuated with Japanese seasonings which are infused rather than mixed, and that’s what makes Nanka’s wagyu steaks special.
The concept at Nanka Japanese Steakhouse is simple:
“We’ll give you protein but we won’t take the taste away from that protein. Here at Nanka, our objective is to maintain clean flavors or clean lines throughout the entire meal, retaining the essence of whatever meat is used. Steak will taste like steak. Shrimp will taste like shrimp. Squid will taste like squid.”Chef Mike Santos
The first thing we had was the Oyster Hollandaise (PHP 365/ 6 pcs) which had this interesting zesty kick. After I realized it had hollandaise sauce, it all made sense!
The Deep Fried Oysters (PHP 375/8 pcs) is a bite-sized bomb of flavor and texture, especially when dipped in the aioli.
The Grilled Ahi Tuna (PHP 355) was seasoned lightly and grilled evenly on the outside.
As for the Tuna and Salmon Chirashi Bowl, the rice was so addictive!
The Garlic Crabs consist of 2 large crabs packed with flavor and oozing crab fat.
The Grilled Togarashi Shrimp (PHP 495/ 9 pcs) were crunchy and flavorful.
The al dente Prawn Garlic Noodles (PHP 375) have the essence of the fresh prawns.
Nanka Japanese Steaks
We got to try the succulent Wagyu Cross Ribeye (PHP 650/ 100g) and Wagyu Cross Striploin (PHP 600/ 100g). Chef Mike Santos was right about one thing: their meats have retained their original flavor. Each bite was bursting with umami.
The Black Onyx Tomahawk (PHP 495/ 100g) is also a fair contender. The dish was further heightened by the homemade condiments like the wasabi salt, miso barbecue sauce and chimichurri.
Equally elegant in flavor to match the protein-packed meal were the Japanese Green Tea Mousse (PHP 215) and Chocolate Ganache Mountee (PHP 245).
