Origin of the Crayfish Party
The consumption of crayfish began in the 16th century in King Erik XIV’s reign. Sweden and neighboring Scandinavian countries discovered the joy of eating crayfish with schnapps or beer as a garden party during summer. However, it wasn’t just about the crayfish. The tradition of Viking parties resembles those of Thor and Odin’s parties in Valhalla with music, a smorgasbord of Nordic dishes and lots of mead! The early vikings practiced “Gemyt” or sharing great food together.
Tragedy struck in the 1950’s when the crayfish plague threatened the freshwater crayfish species. To re-mediate the population issue of the freshwater crayfish, the Norwegian government curbed the consumption of crayfish by limiting it to an annual event. Late August to early September is the only time of the year when the Scandinavians can harvest the crayfish. The traditional method of fishing with a Hook-Line-and-Sinker promotes sustainable fishing as well. After decades, the supply of freshwater crayfish has stabilized and the Nordic people commemorate their success in saving the noble crayfish with the continued celebration of the Crayfish Party.
