Ginebra San Miguel is the oldest liquor brand in the Philippines. In fact, it’s even older than the Philippine Republic! We celebrated World Gin Day 2019 in Seda Vertis North, where we kicked off the event with festive drums and the catchy “One Ginebra Nation” theme song! I atteded last year’s World Gin Day 2018 where we had a chance to have our pictures printed as GSM bottle labels! This year, they had more in store!
We were joined by Ginebra San Miguel’s endorsers: Ginebra Calendar Girl Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, GSM Blue ambassador actress/singer Sue Ramirez and GSM Premium Gin ambassador comedian Alex Calleja. They were there to introduce Ginebra’s new website: www.oneginebranation.com.
True enough, Ginebra San Miguel has united Filipinos for ages. We took a quick trip to the past with a history lesson in the form of a musical theater, starting with the origin of Ginebra by the Ayala Distillery in 1834. (Fun Fact: Ginebra helped shape Philippine history during the Philippine revolution against the Spanish. The company placed several copies of El Filibuaterismo at the bottom of the Ginebra San Miguel crates so they can be circulated undetected.)
The production showed us how Ginebra has brought Filipinos together for generations, continuing from the disco 50’s, rebellious 80’s, the present day, and even a scene where they’re watching a Barangay Ginebra San Miguel basketball match!
You know who else was there? Barangay Ginebra’s star basketball player #7: Robert “Jawo” Jaworski! (He’s actually my neighbor! I haven’t seen him in a loooong time! He used to come to our house back in the 90’s to visit my grandparents and parents.)
After the entertaining production, we went on a One Ginebra Nation Tour around the Philippines with Filipino rock star mixologists, who used various ingredient found around the Philippines in their gin cocktails:
–Kalel Demetrio (Luzon) – “Beautiful With a Heart” using kami as juice and blue sampaguita Spritz.
–Enzo Lim (Visayas) – “Carabao Cocktail” using mangoes.
–Icy Marinas (Mindanao) – “Shalalala” using tables and durian.
We even got to try making our own gin tonic cocktails in this gin buffet! I mixed peppercorn, cardamom and basil leaves in mine!
Chef Laudico Guevarra also prepared a sumptuous feast with popular dishes from around the Philippines to represent Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
World Gin Day 2019 was an awesome party! It’s an event I look forward to every year!
