During my college days, I used to come to Xocolat’s Promenade branch a lot, where my “X” and I would share a huge cup of Taza de Xocolat (PHP 195). The thick, rich, creamy chocolate was simply the best thing ever. I stopped going to Xocolat ever since we broke up. I was invited to Xocolat Cafe’s new branch in Katipunan where I was reminded of how good it was, and that they had more than just a cup of tsokolate-eh to offer. We can always make new memories, right?
Technically, Xocolat’s first branch was in Katipunan. It was an old house that they converted into a cafe 10 years ago. When it moved to the newer branch along the same street, Xocolat Katipunan brought the same old-timey, homey feel with it.
Served in a heart-shaped plate, the Honey Spiced Sausage (PHP 245) is more than just spicy pork sausage with a honey sauce. It also comes with breaded, fried onion rings!
Served with pomodoro and chorizquezo, the savory Croquettas (PHP 175) are crisp on the outside and creamy potato-ey on the inside.
Tortilla de Patata (PHP 245) is Xocolat’s version of the Spanish omelette with chorizo.
The X Salad (PHP 245) is a signature salad served with goat cheese, chicken strips and lime berry. It’s garnished with edible flower petals from plants that Xocolat maintains on the property.
Topped with crispy fried rice noodles, fried eggs and sesame seeds, East Meets West (PHP 245) is a bacon-lettuce-tomato (BLT) salad tossed with oriental dressing.
The Pig Out (PHP 295) is an amazing meal for two that consists of bacons, 2 eggs and Xocolat’s French Toast. The bite-sized cubes of cacao French Toast has a “xoconut” spread in the middle! I would have this even for dinner!
Served with fluffy scrambled egg, grilled tomatoes and fried spinach, the Garlic Beef Tapa Bowl (PHP 245) is a great breakfast bowl to start the day with 100% sirloin beef marinated in cacao, garlic and black pepper.
Rubbed with cacao, the Spiced Xoco Chicken (PHP 245) is a sweet-savory chicken barbecue dish.
The Crispy Chicken Bun (PHP 295) comes in two sliders of breaded fried chicken with a dash of aioli. I found the breading a bit thick, but the chicken was juicy and well-marinated inside.
Topped with fried spinach, the Xocolat Pork Belly (PHP 275) is served with cacao bagoong sauce and a hint of ginger.
The Chorizo Blanco (PHP 245) was my favorite. It had white chocolate sprinkled on the oil-based pasta with spicy chorizo bits.
Xocolat also has pasta without chocolate like the creamy Gruyere Alfredo (PHP 295).
There are two kinds of Churros con Xocolat: Classic (PHP 175) and Bittersweet (PHP 195). The latter has salt and a slight bitter taste from cacao powder, but both are crisp!
For the first time ever, I tried the Gianduja (PHP 165), which is a hot hazelnut drinking chocolate that resembles Nutella. Because I love Nutella, I easily loved Gianduja!
Bicerin (PHP 165) is a coffee version of the Gianduja. It’s a lot more malabnaw but packs a punch.
One of the best discoveries this year is Xocolat’s Vietnamese Egg Coffee (PHP 185). I literally had no idea egg coffee was a thing. I haven’t had the real thing, but I bet Xocolat pretty much captures it! It was so thick and creamy! I would come back for this again and again if I could!
