Now on its 9th branch in Manila, the popular Japanese tempura restaurant Tenya launches in Tiendesitas! The facade is that of an upscale ryokan or innwith all the wooden panels and paper lanterns. We celebrated its grand opening with a bang (literal banging from the taiko or Japanese drums)! We also had a geisha fan dance before lunch was served.
I got to try their All-Star Soba/Udon Teishoku Set(PHP 395), which consists of a bowl of hot/cold soba/udon. a bowl of rice, and a basket of assorted tempura: black tiger prawn, squid, salmon, kani stick, small kakiage, green beans and mushroom.
Tenya is also known for them tempura rice bowls or Tempura Donburi (a.k.a. “Tendon”). On the day of the grand opening, they had a Buy 1 Get 1 promo and were featuring the following bowls:
All-Star – black tiger prawn, squid, salmon, kani stick, green beans and mushroom. Asakusa Special – 3 black tiger prawns and green beans. Jo – 2 black tiger prawns, kani stick, green beans, sweet potato and eggplant. Chicken Mayo – 3 chicken fillets, green beans, corn kernels with Japanese mayo. Buta Kimuchi – 3 pork belly slices, kimuchi.
Must-Try: Isobe Cheese!
While Tendon might be popular for their tempura, their sushi rolls weren’t bad! In fact, there was one that I just have to commend: Isobe Cheese (PHP 185/5 pcs). This morsel is a tempura fried roll of cheddar cheese wrapped in roasted seaweed. It was simply the best thing ever! I would have grabbed @alwayshungryph’s share if I wasn’t polite!
While we were given a brief overview on anime styles and anime character stereotypes, I was happily eating my cute dessert. Drizzled in chocolate syrup and dulce de leche, the Ningyo Yaki Choco Sundae (PHP 135) is vanilla ice cream topped with a baked Nutella-filled pancake in the shape of a bear.
