Every year, Manila gets to taste some top whiskey brands as they come together in one place. Boasting 131 brands of whisky, scotch, bourbon and other blends, Whisky Live is an annual 2-day event where guests can do unlimited taste tests, attend the whisky master classes conducted by experts, witness bar-tending competitions and demonstrations, and socialize with other whisky lovers all evening! Now on its 3rd year, Whisky Live 2018 Manila was held at Shangri-la Fort last November 9-10.
Each guest is given a loot bag with a 10 chips in exchange of a drink, as well as a Recovery Kit and other freebies. You can get more chips by doing the Breathalyzer Test to check whether or not the alcohol level in your blood is well within the regulated limit.
Personally, I liked the Japanese brand Iwai, which has American influences seen in its blend of 25% malt and 75% corn, and vice versa.
I also saw some uncommon brands like Ardbeg,Tomintoul, Glengoyne and Glencadam. Johnnie Walker also released its newest blend called the White Walker was unveiled. Inspired by the Game of Thrones, the White Walker comes in a special winter-themed bottle.
Whisky Master Classes
I attended the whisky master class by Hamish Houliston, Chivas Regal brand ambassador, where he talked about the different whisky regions in Scotland and the taste associate with whisky produced there:
-Speyside: Little to no peat. Apple, vanilla, oak, malt, nutmeg and dried fruit. (Ex. Dalwhinnie, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Maccallan)
-Highland: Fruit cake, malt, oak, heather, dried fruit and smoke. (Ex. Glengoyne, Glenmorangie and Dewar’s)
-Lowland: Light and gentle with no peat. Grass, honeysuckle, cream, toffee and cinnamon. (Ex. Auchentoshan)
-Islay: Peaty single malts. Seaweed, brine, carbolic soap, apple, smoke and kippers. (Ex. Ardberg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig)
-Campbeltown: Dry and pungent. Brine, smoke, dried fruit, vanilla and toffee. (Ex. Glengyle and Springbank)
-Islands: Peat and salinity. Smoke, brine, oil, black pepper and honey. (Ex. Highland Park and Talisker)
There are also some whisky brands that are blended from different sources like Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal, and non-Scotch brands like Penderyn.
