Now on its 10th year, World Gin Day was founded by British blogger Neil Houston and is celebrated every 2nd Saturday of June. What started as a day to bring his friends together to drink gin has grown into a worldwide celebration. Aside from the Philippines, World Gin Day events were also held in the UK, Australia and the US.
As the Philippines celebrates its 120th birthday this June 12, 2018, the world celebrates World Gin Day 2018 just days before it. It shocked us to discover that Ginebra San Miguel is way older than the Philippine society! Filipinos have been enjoying the distinct taste and quality of the country’s pioneering spirit for 184 years!
During the 2018 World Gin Day, GSM celebrated the love of gin with the rest of the world last June 6, 2018. They gathered some of the country’s top master mixologists, a highly-acclaimed chef, popular celebrity performers, and a nation of gin lovers in one big celebration held at the Axon in Green Sun Hotel Makati.
Ginebra San Miguel took guests on a “ginstronomic” tour of the Philippines. Master mixologists Enzo Lim, Kalel Demetrio and Icy Mariñas created special Ginebra San Miguel cocktails to represent the country’s three island groups using Ginebra San Miguel, GSM Blue Light Gin and GSM Premium Gin as base.
Representing the north, Kalel Demetrio calls himself the “Liquid Maestro”. He has traveled around Luzon looking for unique ingredients native to the tribes. He created the “Quatro Katipunero Sour“, a cocktail that incorporates 4 ingredients prominent in Luzon: kamias, sampaguita, labuyo and calamansi.
The “In It to Gin-it” by Icy Marinas uses Cebuano mangoes, sinamak vinegar and Leyte pineapple. The glass is rimmed with peanut kisses, a popular candy sold as pasalubong to tourists.
Enzo Lim crafted the “Samal Beach Cocktail“, a fusion of Pinoy flavors with the Davao pomelo as the primary ingredient.
The three rockstar mixologists were also at the judges’ panel for “Mixologist Showdown”, a contest where the country’s best bartenders whipped up signature cocktails using unique and indigenous ingredients that captured the spirit of the Philippines as a gin nation.
For us bloggers, we had fun taking instagrammable moments at every corner of the event. From posing like epic heroes fighting for one gin nation to immersing ourselves in iconic backdrops with our favorite gin drinks, we had non-stop World Gin Day fun from start to finish. We got to take home the limited edition Ginebra San Miguel bottles with custom-made labels using our photos that day. Yay!
Indeed for Filipinos, drinks are meant to be shared and enjoyed with friends. This same feeling of camaraderie, friendship, togetherness and unity is what Ginebra San Miguel aims to cultivate further as it celebrates World Gin Day as One Gin Nation.
