District 8 echoes the lively industrial feel of bars in Manhattan’s Meat Packing District with the brick walls, leather booths and Hollywood lights. The night I visited, Francis Zamora, the former vice mayor of San Juan, was having dinner with his family, but he spared some time to talk about the place and give me a quick tour. They’ve got lots of murals, and my favorite one was of the female ninja in the VIP section, which is available for booking (consumable amount). They’ve also got the “Owners’ Lounge”, a hidden section behind a sliding door near the kitchen, which can also be booked on nights that none of the partners are around.
Turns out that the number “8” was derived from the fact that there are eight major partners in this new venture including Daniel Padilla, Vice Ganda and James Yap. Each specialty cocktail is named after a partner. We got the Amo (PHP 200+), a bourbon-based drink with Disaronno cherry liqueur, and the Supremo (PHP 200+), a rum-based cocktail. District 8 also has some flavored beers like the Watermelon Beer (PHP 150) or caramel beer.
With Chef Mikel Zaguirre at the helm (chef behind Locavore, FAT and Carnivale), the international fusion cuisine at District 8 was a feast for the tastebuds.

The Wagyu Cube al Ajillo (PHP 490) was amazingly tender! Not the spam-like cubes that I’ve been seeing lately. Great quality stuff! While preparing it al ajillo worked, it
The Oysters and Uni (PHP 370) was visually appealing. I was really excited to try the uni, but the pickled cucumber sort of overpowered it. The only thing it did was equalize the lansa from the oyster.
The Paella y Callos (PHP 350 Solo) was genius! It just made regular paella boring. I savored each grain coated with creamy, paprika-infused tomato gravy and liquid yolk from the soft-boiled egg. Along with some Spanish chorizo and tender ox tripe, a spoonful of this stuff was enough to send my tongue dancing!
For dessert, we got the Jack Daniel’s Sticky Toffee Pudding (PHP 260), which was soaked in melted caramel and vanilla ice cream. The almonds and candied walnuts provided some texture and nutty aromas.
District 8 Gastropub is a hip joint that promises to please the palate and quench the thirst. Would definitely come back to try the rest of the menu!
