Last weekend, the colleague visiting from Australia whom I had lunch with at Namoo House toured Intramuros. There, he met an ex-soldier who told him about a gun range nearby that not only had handguns and shotguns, but also M16s. When my friend heard this, he was keen on finding the place. We did some research but couldn’t find anything near Intramuros, so we tried looking for other gun ranges in Metro Manila. Unfortunately, none of them had M16’s in their inventory, save for Manila Target Shooting Range (MSR) along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, near the Manila World Trade Center. Thus, last Saturday afternoon, we set out to for an adventure.
You have to walk around HK Sun Plaza to find the entrance to the MSR. It’s safer to ask the locals hanging around the area, since they’re nice anyway. One nice thing about the facility is that there are lots of parking spaces. MSR might have looked shady from the outside, but others would call it “rustic”. 🙂
Location: HK Sun Plaza Complex, Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, Pasay, 1307 Metro Manila
Contact Number: (+63 2) 556-5145
Operating Hours: 10 AM to 6 PM Daily
For a one-off experience, the only rates to remember are the following, which include the gun rental, range rental, ammunition and target paper:
-Handgun (50 rounds/100 rounds): PHP 3,000/PHP 5,000 per person
-Shotgun (25 rounds): PHP 3,500 per person
-Rifle (20 rounds): PHP 3,500 per person
Prior to entering the target range, we had to wear the ear muffs and the protective goggles for obvious reasons. Once we were inside, the instructor taught us the proper stance when holding and firing a rifle. Having a proper stance is important not just for obtaining an accurate shot, but also to avoid any injuries for the people around you. Remember, these are LIVE bullets! Here are the basic steps in establishing the proper posture:
- Place your right hand on the pistol grip with the pointer finger on the trigger guard. Place your left hand on the hand guard to support the front.
Plant the stock firmly on your right chest, but not directly on the shoulder joint.
Rest your cheek on the stock as you peer through the sights.
Align the front sight and the rear sight against the target across the hall.
Steady your breathing. Release your breath as you squeeze the trigger.
My Experience #GirlsWithGuns
The instructor looked at me from head to toe and joked about me getting any rounds into the target paper. Kuya, just because I’m in a pink, frilly dress doesn’t mean I can’t shoot. Anubaaa… I’ve already experienced firing a shotgun, and it had such a monstrous recoil that my shoulder was sore the following morning! The M16 had very little recoil in comparison.
My very first shot went into the target’s B-zone, and I think that impressed him a lot, so much so that he taught me how to un-jam the rifle by myself. (Their M16 got jammed a lot.) This was something he would normally do for other guests. It’s pretty simple, really. I just had to press on the magazine release button to remove it, then pull back the charging handle to loosen any shells stuck in the ejection port. I even got to put the bullets back and cock the rifle myself.
The entire thing lasted for only 15 minutes. I was un-jamming the rifle half the time, but that was a good experience in itself. With 20 cartridges, I managed to get 15 into the target paper’s black area. Not bad for my first try! Super fun and fulfilling!
