Hidden within the streets of Legaspi Village is a French bakery with an Asian twist called Boulangerie22 (pronounced “boo-lawn-jerry”). The interior resembles the Paris Metro with white wall tiles and subway routes, while the furnishings are more rustic French country, giving off a Sunday Market feel. While the flavors may be foreign, all the ingredients are locally sourced. B22 is an original concept of the couple Andrea and David Amado of the Amado Group Corporation, the same people who have brought Korean cosmetic brands Etude House, Tony Moly and Leaders Insolution to the Philippines.
Similar to Bread Talk, you pick up a tray and select everything you want before paying. The only difference is that each product is already individually packed with oxygen absorbers to keep the bread fresh. This makes takeaways more convenient for patrons. Toast them for best results!
B22 has its own Japanese and Korean master bakers, and I must say that the consistency of the breads are really good! Some notable products are the Korean Sweet Red Bean Bread and the Japanese Cream Cheese Custard Bread, which comes in strawberry and blueberry, too. I personally like the strawberry flavor for the subtle tartness amidst the clean cream cheese taste.
My ultimate favorite is the Almond Cookie Butter Croissant. The almond cookie batter on top gives it a chewy texture in contrast with the crunchy, flaky one inherent to the croissant. And do I taste a hint of coconut? I’m not really sure, but this croissant is really good!
Another favorite is the Chocolate Walnut Cookie. BEST.COOKIE.EVER. It’s crunchy outside but chewy inside–just the way we like our cookie–but Boulangerie22 managed to pull this off on an ultra-thin cookie! It’s amazing how it doesn’t break apart easily. What I like most about this cookie is the dominant but not overpowering vanilla essence. It’s so mabango!
For those who prefer to snack on savory breads, B22 also has influences from Hong Kong and Singapore in the Hungarian Sausage Mozzarella Bread and meat floss buns like the Cheddar Chicken Floss Bread. Both are great for breakfast.
They have a variety of cakes, mostly chocolate like the 24K Gold Leaf Bear dotted with edible gold leaves. Another East-Asian touch to the French bakery is the cutesy-wootsy Character Cakes great for any occasion.
The best part about all this is that Boulangerie22’s high quality products are really AFFORDABLE! It’s easy on the pocket for the young professionals working in the area but appreciate good pastry with a cup of coffee.
The branch in One Legazpi Park had its soft opening in November 2015 but officially opened on February 24, 2016. B22 now has 8 branches: Greenfield District, Festival Mall and Alabang Hills, to name a few.
